Kalles Kaviar is one of the most famous Swedish products of all time – and also amongst the best loved ones. It is smoked fish roe, not fishy or oily, but salty in the taste. Launched in 1954, Kalles is based on a recipe that dates back hundreds of years, which found its way to Abba by way of a thrifty peddler who sold them the recipe for 100 Swedish Crowns – a small fortune in 1954. Abba made a pretty good deal though – as Kalles is as popular as ever and is found in Swedish fridges everywhere. Try it with hardboiled egg for breakfast, with cheese, avocado or simply on its own on some good bread or crispbread.
